Before I began selling real estate in Los Altos and Los Altos Hills more than 28 years ago, I was a teacher at Egan Junior High School. Education has therefore always been an important part of my connection to this community, and schools continue to be an important consideration for many of the homebuyers I work with today.
One of the first things to understand is that a Los Altos or Los Altos Hills address does not necessarily determine the school district or even the high school a student will attend. Depending on the location of a home, public school assignments can include the Los Altos School District, Mountain View Los Altos High School District, Palo Alto Unified School District, Cupertino Union School District, and Fremont Union High School District.
That makes verifying the schools serving an individual property an important part of the home search.
Los Altos School District
The Los Altos School District serves most of Los Altos, approximately half of Los Altos Hills, as well as portions of Mountain View, Palo Alto, and unincorporated Santa Clara County. The district currently has seven elementary schools and two junior high schools.
The elementary schools are Almond Elementary School, Covington Elementary School, Gardner Bullis Elementary School, Loyola Elementary School, Oak Elementary School, Santa Rita Elementary School, and Springer Elementary School. Students then attend either Blach Junior High School or Egan Junior High School, depending on their attendance area.
Having taught at Egan before entering real estate, I have a particularly personal connection to the Los Altos public schools and an appreciation for the role they play in the community.
School assignment should always be verified for a specific property. Even within the Los Altos School District, attendance areas determine the school of residence, and actual placement can also depend on enrollment and capacity. The district provides school locator and registration information for current information.
Los Altos High School or Mountain View High School?
This is an area where buyers are sometimes surprised.
Students living in Los Altos are not automatically assigned to Los Altos High School. The Mountain View Los Altos High School District serves Los Altos, Mountain View, and Los Altos Hills, and its two comprehensive high schools are Los Altos High School and Mountain View High School. School assignment depends on the attendance boundary for a student’s residence.
For buyers with a preference for a particular high school, it is important to verify the assignment for the exact property rather than assume that a Los Altos address feeds to Los Altos High. The Mountain View Los Altos High School District maintains current school boundary information on its website.
Some Los Altos Homes Are Served by Cupertino Schools
Another distinction that can be particularly important to buyers is that portions of Los Altos are served by the Cupertino Union School District.
For example, Montclaire Elementary School is a Cupertino Union school with a Los Altos address. The district assigns students according to residence and provides an official School Locator to check preliminary school assignments for a specific address.
At the high school level, some Los Altos addresses are served by Homestead High School in the Fremont Union High School District. Homestead serves students from Sunnyvale, Cupertino, and Los Altos.
This is another reason school districts should be considered property by property. Two homes within Los Altos can have very different public-school pathways depending on their locations.
Public Schools in Los Altos Hills
Los Altos Hills presents an entirely different situation because the town does not operate its own public school district.
Depending on the location of a property, Los Altos Hills students may be served by the Los Altos School District and Mountain View Los Altos High School District, or by the Palo Alto Unified School District. PAUSD specifically notes that some Los Altos Hills addresses fall within its boundaries and provides school information for address-specific verification.
Buyers considering a Los Altos Hills property should confirm the exact assignment directly with the appropriate district. Palo Alto Unified enrollment and boundary information is available on the district website.
That distinction can be particularly important during a home search because two Los Altos Hills properties with similar acreage, price, and characteristics may be served by entirely different school districts.
School Boundaries and Real Estate
For some buyers, public school assignment is one of the most important criteria in a home search. For others, it is one consideration among many, along with neighborhood, lot size, architectural style, condition, commute, privacy, and proximity to downtown Los Altos.
School district can influence demand for a property, but it should not be considered in isolation when evaluating a home’s value.
It is also important not to rely solely on the school information shown in a real estate listing or on a third-party real estate website. District boundaries, attendance areas, enrollment policies, and transfer availability can change. The Cupertino Union School District School Locator, for example, states that its online results are preliminary and that official school assignment is provided through the district’s Student Assignment department.
The same principle applies throughout Los Altos and Los Altos Hills: school assignments should always be confirmed directly with the appropriate district for the specific property being considered.
A Distinctive Part of Buying a Home in Los Altos or Los Altos Hills
The variety of public-school options is part of what makes understanding Los Altos and Los Altos Hills real estate more nuanced than simply searching by city name.
A Los Altos address may be associated with the Los Altos School District or Cupertino Union School District at the elementary and middle-school levels, and with Los Altos High, Mountain View High, or Homestead High at the high-school level. In Los Altos Hills, the public-school path may instead include Los Altos and Mountain View Los Altos schools or Palo Alto Unified schools.
For buyers, knowing these distinctions at the beginning of a home search can help focus attention on properties that meet their priorities. For sellers, understanding how a property’s school assignment fits into the broader local market can be important when positioning and marketing a home.
My years as an Egan teacher gave me my first professional connection to this community. More than 28 years of selling homes here have added an entirely different perspective. Understanding where a property is, which schools serve it, and how those distinctions matter to buyers is all part of understanding Los Altos and Los Altos Hills real estate.
Note: School boundaries and assignments can change and should always be confirmed directly with the appropriate school district.
